THINGS TO DO

Ermelinda's Contemporary Ceramics

Weekly clay classes for children who want proper hands-on ceramics, making projects over a run of lessons rather than a one-off crafty session.

About

Ermelinda’s ceramics classes are built around proper clay-making rather than quick craft-table projects. The children’s programme is described as creating with clay across a run of weekly lessons, which means children stay with a project long enough to actually learn the process rather than taking something home after one session.

The published children’s setup is for ages 7 to 12 and runs from Ermelinda’s studio at 3 South Dockyard Approach. Weekly Wednesday or Thursday lessons are structured as a minimum block of six sessions so that each project has time to be built, finished, and taken through the firing stage properly.

The appeal here is the hands-on, material side of it. Children are learning genuine clay techniques like pinch pots, slab work, coil building, modelling, and painting fired pieces, so this feels much closer to real studio ceramics than a generic art class.
